New Delhi: Two days after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the Agnipath scheme for recruitment and career opportunities in the Indian armed forces, namely, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air force (IAF), top officers of the services have elaborated upon the details of the ‘transformative’ induction programme.
According to Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Naval Command, the ‘Agniveer‘ program for the Indian Navy will have 16 weeks of basic training, two weeks of sea training, and 16 weeks of professional training.
The Agniveer programme for the Army will involve soldiers serving for four years, after which 25 per cent will be retained and allowed to join the Army like a normal soldier. “The Army’s recruitment process for the Agnipath scheme will be the same as it was earlier and no compromises will be made in educational and physical standards,” Lieutenant General KK Repswal, Chief of Staff Eastern Command said.

According to Repswal, the recruitment for the Agniveer programme in the Indian Army will start in the next three months, after which they will go for a four-year service with a training of 10 weeks to 6 months. “The four-year service in the army will prove to be highly beneficial,” he further added.

According to the programme brief on the official website of the IAF, Agniveers will have to meet the medical eligibility conditions laid down for enrolment in the IAF as applicable to respective categories/ trades. Agniveers would form a distinct rank in the IAF, different from any other existing rank and will be assigned tasks based on the organizational requirement.

The recruited persons will be paid a monthly remuneration of Rs 30,000 with a fixed annual increment. Upon completion of the engagement period of four years, Agniveers will be eligible to receive a ‘Seva Nidhi’ package, which will be exempted from the Income Tax.
